Walthamstow stadium, an iconic London landmark in east London, famous for its greyhound racing track and a place to celebrate an occasion or party event is to close after 75 years and will be sold to property developers.
Famed for its pink and green neon-lit frontage, the stadium has been one of the capital’s most recognised landmarks.
The east London site which is close to the London 2012 Olympic Stadium site, has long been a target for developers. Falling profits and attendances have also forced the directors to sell up.
Charles Chandler, whose family have owned the course since it opened in 1933 said most of the greyhounds currently racing at the stadium would be accomodated at other racecources.
Walthamstow stadium has long been a venue for racing fans and people getting together for a birthday celebration or hen night and stag party and it will be a massive loss for London.
The Walthamstow stadium racing will continue until the middle of August 2008. After this date there will be just two dog race tracks left in the capital, Wimbledon and Romford.
